Eyelid surgery

Blepharoplasty: what eyelid surgery fixes, what it costs, and how to start

Eyelid surgery removes excess skin and fat that make the eyes look tired, hooded or puffy. Here is what it treats, what it usually costs, and how to get an estimate from one clinic near you.

  • Upper eyelids: heavy or hooded lids, extra skin over the crease
  • Lower eyelids: bags and puffiness under the eyes
  • Both: often done together, in one operation

What eyelid surgery costs

US prices. Your price depends on your eyelids, the surgeon and where the surgery is done. The full cost guide explains what adds to the price.

ProcedureAverage surgeon fee (ASPS)Typical total, all in
Upper eyelids$3,359$3,000 to $6,000
Lower eyelids$3,876$3,800 to $6,500 or more

The ASPS average is the surgeon's fee only: it does not include anesthesia, the operating room or other costs. The all-in ranges are what practices publish for the full price. One office-based practice, for example, charges $6,500 per procedure under local anesthesia, with no separate facility fee.

Questions patients ask

What is blepharoplasty?+

Blepharoplasty is eyelid surgery. On the upper lids it removes excess skin, and sometimes fat, that makes the eyes look heavy or hooded. On the lower lids it reduces bags and puffiness under the eyes.

Upper, lower or both?+

Upper eyelid surgery treats hooded or heavy lids. Lower eyelid surgery treats bags under the eyes. Many people have both at once. A surgeon decides with you which one fits what bothers you.

How much does eyelid surgery cost?+

In the US the average surgeon fee is $3,359 for the upper lids and $3,876 for the lower lids, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. With anesthesia and the facility, practices publish totals of about $3,000 to $6,500 per area and $6,000 to $12,000 for both.

What is recovery like?+

Bruising and swelling are normal at first and fade over the following weeks. Your surgeon gives you your own timeline and tells you when you can go back to work and exercise.

Does insurance cover eyelid surgery?+

Cosmetic eyelid surgery is not covered. Insurers sometimes cover upper eyelid surgery when drooping lids block your vision, usually after a visual field test. Ask your insurer what they need.

Can I see my result before surgery?+
